Walter hand forges and heat treats each chisel from high carbon steel. These are the chisels he has personally developed over the course of 25 years of scabbard making.
Saya Nomi -- or Japanese Scabbard Chisels -- are designed for hollowing out the interior of Japanese sword scabbards. They contain two unusual features. First, the extended tang of the chisel is bent slightly, allowing the chisel to reach into the hollow of the scabbard without beating up the craftsman's knuckles. Second, the chisel has a slight belly causing the cutting edge to curve slightly. This prevents the chisel from gouging and binding in the cut.
Typically width is roughly 1", though because these are hand-made items, the width varies slightly from chisel to chisel.
Wide Saya Nomi (Scabbard Chisel)
Each chisel is hand forged and heat treated. As a result, each is unique in dimension, appearance and configuration. Each chisel contains evidence of forging in the form of hammer marks, scale, etc.
